Metairie is an unincorporated community in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. It is the most populated community in Jefferson Parish and one of the largest unincorporated communities in the nation. Metairie is located on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. The community encompasses a land area of 23 square miles.

Metairie has a population of 145,000 people. Roughly 35% of adults over age 25 have a bachelor’s degree. The community has over 7,700 veterans. 

The population of Metairie is 70% white, 15% Hispanic, 9% black and 4% Asian. An estimated 14% of residents were born in a foreign country. Eighteen percent of residents speak a native language other than English. There are 15,500 Spanish speakers, 1,500 Arabic speakers, 1,500 Chinese speakers, and 1,100 French speakers in Metairie.
