My name is Robert Wilson, LMHC, and I am a clinical counselor and ordained pastor. I have served as a pastor and was elected to serve as chaplain to the police and fire departments of Dighton-Rehoboth, as well as a counselor to the town’s board of selectmen. Before I answered the call of God, I owned and ran an investment company in the city of Providence for many years. My experience on both sides of the counseling relationship, as both a counselor and a counselee, has helped me develop a unique counseling method that synthesizes empathy, education, experience, and excellence. I am personally vested in my clients and treat each with dignity, compassion, value, and esteem. Because each client is a unique individual, I cater treatment plans accordingly. My motivation is to help people become emotionally healthy individuals, to develop into the best possible version of themselves. I help them think better, so that they can live better.
I commend you on taking the first step, but anxiety, depression, feeling lost and out of control are not states you need to endure. I am passionate about helping others build tools and develop the skills they need to find relief and gain the confidence to navigate through life's rough times. Using evidence-based therapeutic approaches, the goal is to achieve empowerment to work through any current issues while gaining the ability to handle future ones. It is not about controlling the waves, it's about learning to surf them.
Most clients tell me they feel comfortable with me almost immediately, often within the first phone call. I don’t rush you or sit behind emotional distance. I show up as a real person, warm, steady, curious, and without judgment, so you can finally stop carrying everything alone. My approach is conversational and grounded in real life. I help you slow your thoughts enough to separate fear from reality, soften the self-criticism that’s been running the show, and understand the experiences that shaped you. I gently challenge the patterns that keep you anxious or overwhelmed, but always in a way that feels supportive rather than intrusive. People often say therapy with me feels surprisingly natural, like speaking with someone who truly gets them.
Often we feel that happiness is just out of reach, that we need to perfect something, someone, or ourselves to become happy. In a safe, intimate therapeutic setting, where confidentiality is required, you can slowly examine the issues that challenge you. Core beliefs about yourself, and how you relate to others, can change. When you reflect on relationship patterns, you may find they begin to make sense. Taking agency over your own reactions, whether anger, sadness, or self-blame, and learning how to soothe yourself can take the place of the constant quest for external perfection. I believe that children are deeply loyal to their parents and that, in therapy, we can discover how your childhood loyalties may be sabotaging your ability to feel both happy and at peace.
