Opioid abuse is a major issue in Contra Costa County. In 2015 and 2016, more than 100 county residents died from opioid overdoses. Over those two years, roughly 9,700 residents showed opioid dependence, and 54,000 residents misused opioids. The epidemic has moved the county to file a federal lawsuit against drug distributors.

Current estimates say among the 6,597 residents diagnosed with opioid use disorder, 3,562 lack access to treatment. County officials are concerned the lack of health resources may mean that the opioid epidemic continues for another decade.
