Concord is the largest city in Contra Costa County, California. It covers a land area of 31 square miles. The population of Concord increased by 6% between 2010 and 2017. Around 130,000 people live in the city. 

The racial composition of Concord is 49% white, 31% Hispanic, 11% Asian, and 4% black. Nearly 27% of residents are foreign-born, and 36% speak a language other than English. There are 26,900 Spanish speakers, 3,000 Tagalog speakers, and 2,400 Chinese speakers in Concord.  

The median age in Concord is 38 years old. One third of adults age 25 or older have a bachelor’s degree. Concord is home to 6,100 veterans.

Mental Health in Concord

Substance use is a growing concern in Contra Costa County. In 2016, 389 Contra Costa residents died due to drug-related causes. More than 50 of these deaths resulted from opioid overdoses. This rate translates to one opioid-related death per week and a 7% increase from 2014’s death rate. 

Substance abuse is also an issue among the homeless population in Concord. In 2011, more than half of the 950 homeless individuals in the city had substance dependence issues. Just under half had another mental health condition.
