Working with Suicidal Teens: Documentation, Referral, and Treatment Options

Presented by Támara Hill, MS, NCC, LPC on 01-05-2018 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Clinicians are trained to recognize suicidality and prevent suicide in adolescents just as they are trained to help individuals, families, and communities work through the thoughts and emotions that reverberate from the traumatic loss. When suicidal ideation is addressed in therapy, documentation is as crucial as understanding additional treatment options and making appropriate referrals.

In this two-hour web conference, Támara Hill will explain the various levels of care available to teens and outline the process for making referrals. It is often easy to admit a teen in a hospital for short-term care, but it can be very difficult to secure higher levels of care for extended periods of time. Attendees will learn what risk factors require referrals to a variety of other treatment options, including:

  • outpatient
  • intensive outpatient
  • inpatient
  • hospitalization
  • group therapy
  • school-based

Támara will describe how she has successfully used specific "buzz words" and terminology in referrals to convey the severity of an adolescent’s suicidality and expedite admissions to treatment programs.

Támara will discuss her own experiences navigating treatment with her most severe adolescent cases. She will share strategies for developing and maintaining sound clinical documentation as well as ways to support suicidal teens until a referral is processed and the intake appointment is attended. Attendees will also learn about safety planning and how to appropriately maintain communication with families and schools.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe the referral process for adolescent suicidality.
  2. Explain the different levels of care and their recommended treatment options.
  3. Utilize strategies that facilitate a referral and/or an admission to a hospital.
  4. Identify strategies for maintaining appropriate communication with families and schools.
  5. Create a comprehensive safety plan during the referral process.
  6. Demonstrate skills for properly documenting adolescent suicidality.
