My Approach to Helping

Just like anything else in the world, there's no one therapeutic approach that works best for everyone. That is why I incorporate multiple methods into my practice to best help every unique client. Here are three main approaches I use:

*Gestalt Therapy*
In Gestalt Therapy, the therapist and the client are focused on the present. Through this approach, you will be able to become more aware of your body sensations and what they might be eager to express. Oftentimes, when we fully hear and communicate with the estranged or disowned parts of ourselves, we are able to begin to heal and move on.

Since 2012, I have been receiving training and supervision in Gestalt therapy from the Gestalt Center in New York. What I have learnt has helped many clients, of different ages and cultural backgrounds, become more aware of their existing behavioral and thinking patterns and find ways to update them. This in turn has helped them live a more authentic life.

*Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)*
CBT is a problem focused and action oriented form of therapy. It aims at identifying problems and practicing solutions to modify undesirable behaviors and/or thinking patterns. I found this approach particularly effective in helping children and clients with OCD tendencies. Depending on your preference and goals, I'm able to provide a structured framework with concrete tools such as homework, in session exercises, etc.

*Psychodynamic Therapy*
In short, psychodynamic therapy is a modern version of psychoanalysis. The therapist serves less like a "blank screen" but more as a real person that can relate to you. With this approach, you will be supported to express current emotions as well as earlier important life events. Through exploration, you may start to see how past unresolved internal conflicts affect your present life. These insights are likely to greatly inform your personal growth, and I will be your witness and cheerleader.

Here is what to expect when we meet:

-A safe and warm working environment.

-A compassionate ear to hear your stories and feelings.

-My support for you in understanding yourself more deeply and having more choices.

-Together discovering concrete tools that you can use to achieve self-actualization.

More Info About My Practice

With an early passion in psychology, I moved from China to the US when I was 17. My experience as an Asian immigrant studying in the U.S. enhanced my understanding of the humanity and struggles in all of us, and working with people from all over the world informed my counseling skills and cultural sensitivity.

Since graduating from Columbia University, I have worked as a community therapist and bilingual school counselor in Queens, NY for over 5 years. From my experience in supporting adolescents and parents in school, I noticed that teen behavioral problems often stem from their family dynamics. Many defiant behaviors are just symptoms of the client's poor relationships with others and the self. Since then, I have focused my work on understanding the underlying wounds that triggered the unhealthy coping strategies. As we understand what drives us to choose, we have the freedom to choose AGAIN. It is the relationship that heals. When we work together, I will provide a safe environment for us to develop trust and alliance. I'm looking forward to witnessing your new freedom.
