My Approach to Helping
Greetings - Let me introduce myself and mention a few things about my practice briefly. My name is Bill McKenzie, I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and also a musician and writer. I have a Master's degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield in Human Development Counseling. I'm a happily married husband, and father of three girls who are now fully grown. Having four significant women in my life has kept me on my game and been a rich experience I'd never trade.
My approach to counseling follows upon the wonderful and challenging charge from Carl Rogers which paraphrased and simply stated is that every patient brings with them their own solution to any issue they may have, but the therapist's role is to help clarify through a collaborative procees the discovery of deeper issues, and the steps that then lead to inner health and happiness. Therapy is an evolving process of open and fearless reflective questions which spur deep curiosity - therapy can feel like Alice exploring Wonderland, or like a ship sailing on uncharted waters. But above all else, it means having a partner to walk with you on an intensely personal, and occasionally confusing journey.
Therapy is more than healing or problem solving, it is one of life's genuine thrilling adventures. My hope is to always approach therapy as a passage into deeper meaning and purpose, flowing from a partnership between two people seeking healthy solutions. If you're from Central Illinois and need a listening ear, I hope I can help.
