My Approach to Helping
Greetings - Let me introduce myself and briefly mention a few things about my practice. My name is Bill McKenzie, I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and also a musician and writer. I have a Master's degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield in Human Development Counseling. I'm a happily married husband, and father of three girls who are now fully grown. Having four significant women in my life has kept me on my game and been a rich experience I'd never trade.
My approach to counseling follows upon the wonderful and challenging charge from Carl Rogers which paraphrased and simply stated is that every patient brings with them their own solution to any issue they may face, and the therapist's role is to help clarify through a collaborative process the discovery of the deeper issues that impede growth. The steps that then lead to inner health and happiness are close at hand but undiscovered. Therapy is an evolving process of open and fearless reflective questions which spur rich curiosity. Therapy can feel like Alice exploring Wonderland, or like a ship sailing on uncharted waters. But above all else, it means having a partner to walk with you on an intensely personal, and occasionally confusing journey.
Therapy is more than healing or problem solving, it is one of life's genuine thrilling adventures. My hope is to always approach therapy as a passage into deeper meaning and purpose, flowing from a partnership between two people seeking one healthy solution. If you're from Central Illinois and need a listening ear, I hope I can help. (TeleTherapy by video available)
