Mental Health Statistics for Wilmington 

Opioid abuse abuse is a major issue in Wilmington and the surrounding New Castle County. Between 2013 and 2014, there was a 93.5% increase of heroin-related deaths in the county. The most recent data show Wilmington is Delaware’s largest local heroin supply base. Between 2014 and 2015, New Castle County saw a 130% increase in fentanyl-related deaths. In 2015, 59% of all drug overdose deaths in Delaware took place in New Castle County.

Youth drug use is also a concern in the area. In the 2016 Delaware School Survey, researchers asked Wilmington 11th graders if they had used illegal substances in the past year.  Nearly 3% had abused “downers,” 2% reported abusing crack cocaine, and 1% had abused heroin.
