My Approach to Helping
Taking steps towards healing and self discovery can be difficult and I aim to build a safe and attuned environment where you can let your guard down. A safe space where you can share whatever is on your mind and still feel respected, accepted, and hopeful. Hope that life has more to offer than the pain or challenges that have brought you to a place of sadness, stress, feeling overwhelmed or stuck.
Working in partnership with you is the most important aspect of counselling for me. I see counselling as a process of continuous change and personal growth where my role is to assist and empower you. To help you reconnect with and build upon your strengths so that you can confront the challenges you face. In a client-centered experiential approach, I will guide you into a process of discussions and activities that will help you recognise, understand and reframe, change, or rewire rigid andor unhelpful thoughts, feelings, behaviours, sensations and memories, so that you can reconnect with your life in a way that is working for you!
It has brought a great deal of meaning to my life to work with people in the way that I do. I am honored to walk with others through both their pain and triumphs.
My Therapy Focus
Normal People Experiencing Abnormal Situations- Trauma & PTSD
What is Trauma?
"Trauma" is any experience that catches us by surprise, creates feelings of helplessness, and is experienced as overwhelming. Each of us has a limit on what we can tolerate, it is part of being a human being and not a sign of weakness or inadequacy. When we reach and exceed the limit, our brains switch to a different mode of operating and stores the experience as "traumatic".
How I can Help!
The most important first step in trauma therapy is working with you at your pace and helping you discover or teaching you strategies and skills that you can use to manage the painful feelings and memories that may emerge in therapy.
It is only when you and I decide that you are ready, we will move on to the reprocessing of traumatic memories. I use techniques such as EMDR and OEI to help you face the painful memories in small pieces and at a pace that is manageable for you and not overwhelming.
What You Can Expect and How Long Does it Take?
Working through traumatic memories is not an "easy road", but, you absolutely can move on from trauma--no matter how bad it is!
How long would it take, depends on a number of factors, including how many traumatic experiences you have had. In general, the more traumas you have endured the longer the therapeutic process. You and I decide together on which memories to process and in what order. People usually report positive changes in few sessions.
