A few thoughts about insurance....
Using insurance means that your counseling service will need to be considered "medically necessary". This means, in order for your insurance company to pay for your counseling, I will have to give you a mental health diagnosis. This information is stored permanently with your insurance company and becomes a part of your health care record.
Typically, insurance will not cover life transition issues, self-esteem or interpersonal relationship concerns.
Using your insurance will compromise your confidentiality. Your information will be communicated through a systems process and received and reviewed by several people. This information is often communicated through the internet.
Furthermore, using insurance companies allows someone you don’t know to make decisions regarding the type and duration of treatment you receive.
If you have insurance that covers mental health services, you may want to contact your carrier to inquire if you have the option to use an “out-of-network” provider. Insurance companies are often willing to reimburse an “out-of-network” provider. If they will, you will pay for counseling sessions as we go along and I will provide you with the necessary documentation and information needed to submit a request for reimbursement from your insurance provider.
The advantage of this is I will not be compelled to provide any information to your insurance provider about the content of your treatment. Your confidentiality remains intact and you get reimbursed for a portion of your treatment.
