As both a PhD psychologist and licensed marriage & family therapist, I help both individuals and couples face a wide array of challenges. I use a multi-level approach to therapy, incorporating many techniques. My executive coaching work with business leaders has strongly influenced the way I do therapy. Clients frequently tell me that they appreciate my "coaching" approach of being more active and engaged compared to previous therapy they've encountered, rather than "just listening."

After seeing couples change so slowly during the first 28 years of doing marriage therapy Dr. Tim McCarthy developed a new approach in 2010. His Relationship Co-Coaching challenges common beliefs that one should not have to change and that partners should always accept one another just as they are. Dr. McCarthy's approach treats the relationship as an opportunity for dynamic growth through mutual coaching.
Each partner learns to clearly identify his or her negative relationship patterns and to help one another change through mutual, respectful coaching. The approach eliminates complaining and blaming by nurturing open communication and feedback. Couples who have long struggled to break recurrent patterns of negativity and conflict can learn the skills they need for effective communication and restore love and passion.
