My Approach to Helping
With Pride month in mind, struggles with sexuality and gender may be highlighted. I’m here to help and have first hand experiences to draw from in understanding the difficulties.
My belief is that each of us possess the ability to create positive changes in our own lives. But there are times when life becomes so overwhelming that it's difficult to know where or how to even begin to make those changes. It's even more challenging if you are experiencing a loss, sudden life change, identity confusion or possibly isolation. If faced with unexpected and sudden hardship, So often, we need to keep going despite our internal struggles. We can even live in survival mode with chronic exhaustion from needing to ‘play the part’ or manage a secret identity. Whatever the situation that has you seeking help today, know I will partner with you. You don’t have to do this alone. If you’re new to this, there are different styles of counseling. Mine is a blend of several because one size does not fit all.
For example, If it’s job loss you’ve recently experienced and you need solution-focused counseling, coping skills and resources that’s what counseling with me will look like. If it’s coping with a traumatic experience, or significant loss, we will first identify the impacts on your life and come up with ways to cope that meet your needs and lifestyle and work our way to the use of evidence based trauma therapy, EMDR. If you’re struggling with your sexuality, then I will likely start by helping you sort through all of the identity confusion, questions and anxiety. Whatever your situation, I will partner with you in a non judgmental way, help you set realistic goals, provide support (and resources where needed) and direction toward improved quality of life and personal empowerment.
