My Approach to Helping

I focus on couple relationships. I believe we all yearn for connection because it is a basic human need. Often our own fears and defenses get in the way of expressing and accepting this need in a way that invites empathy and connection. I work with my clients to see each other more clearly and create deep meaningful connections.

I believe all of us have the innate capacity and desire to change for the better. We might have developed coping patterns that once served us well but are no longer beneficial and rather causing us pain. My job as a therapist is to help you get in touch with your own internal strength and facilitate change from the inside out. This kind of internally driven change is permanent.

When we feel safe, connected with those we love, and we continue to learn and grow, we feel happy. This connection ironically requires that we are strong, independent people who can stand on our own first. We all have an innate yearning to individuate and pursue our own dreams and hopes. When these needs for individuality and connection are balanced and in harmony, we achieve the full height of our potential and happiness.

Most painful experiences stem from a lack of connection with those we love, a lack of growth as a full human being, or a combination of both. I use neuroscience techniques to get liberated from these painful relationship patterns.

My primary treatment modality is EMDR, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and some of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I also treat a lack of connection, various addictions, "codependence", divorce adjustment, PTSD, depression, panic attacks, anxiety, and OCD. Most of these symptoms are rooted in a lack of secure attachment with others. With powerful and moving experiences with our partner, difficult interactions can transform into deep understanding, connection and safety. You can live a happy, fulfilled life!

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

I respect you as an equal person. You're not broken or flawed. You have just picked up maladaptive coping patterns that served you well for a time being but you have outgrown them. My job is to help you see those unproductive tools and replace them with the ones that serve you better. You are in charge of your life, which means you are responsible for your reality. I feel privileged to be trusted to witness you creating a reality that you desire.

Groups I Work With

My primary focus is couple relationship issues using proven techniques and tools. Everyone yearns for connection despite painful fights or disengagement. With my specific training in couple issues and proven tools that work, you can permanently change painful interactions into deep connection and happy relationships. Whether you are in a committed relationship or want to better prepare for the next one, I can help you create happier relationships. If you are experiencing disengagement as a couple, frequent fights, codependency, dating the same kind of "wrong" people, too painful to stay but too stuck to get out or longing for connection, I can help.

I use EFT, EMDR, CBT and systemic psychology, all of which are scientifically proven to be effective. I help my clients with powerful evidence-based tools to improve relationships, heal from past wounds and make a permanent change. Most marital issues stem from past painful experiences unrelated to your current partner, but it feels like they are the ones causing pain. I can help you untangle the web of complex relationship dynamics and create a deep, fulfilling relationship.

I have a PhD in Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy. I have taught Marriage Enhancement at BYU and supervised Master students in MFT. I use neuroscience tools to bring about permanent change, not just superficial, temporary solutions. I focus on restructuring relationship patterns to create permanent change.
