My Approach to Helping
More than just a "counselor"- I am a wholehearted listener, a genuine presence, and someone willing to go to the depths with you in your story.I know that exploring your life or relationship with someone (especially all of the challenging parts!) is not always easy to do. You can expect me to always be working towards fostering a connection with you that feels warm and engaging so that you feel comfortable and able to do the hard work of being in counseling.
My work is greatly influenced by emotionally focused therapy (EFT), psychodynamic/psychoanalytic theory, and Rogerian or person-centered therapy. What this really means is that I believe emotions are the most powerful and telling pieces revealed in session; that humans are relational beings that thrive in secure, positive, reliable connections; and that sometimes unconsciously we don't quite connect to our emotions or drives for certain thoughts or behaviors we might have. What this looks like in session is a much closer exploration of how you feel, how your experiences have impacted you, what your goals are, and what you need to reach them.
I operate from a HAES (Health At Every Size®) perspective, which means that I believe an individual’s innate value to this world and their weight are separate things and that health is not dependent on body size. I am also LGBTQ+ affirming.
You are welcome in my space as you are. I hope to help you feel comfortable and able to do this work, no matter your background, orientation, or identity.
Individual Adult Therapy
Each person starts their counseling journey with their own unique set of obstacles and goals. My work is centered on helping you to align with yourself so that you are more connected to how you feel and what you need. In session, we will also consider the unconscious mind and deeply examine the drives for your behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Another aspect of my approach is to consider what important information you've learned from your attachments and how primary relationships in your life affect you.
Couples and Relationship Therapy
Everyone wants to be heard, understood, and supported by their partner- but problematic ways of communicating and connecting with one another are hard habits to break. Our goals in couples counseling will involve improving and rebuilding your ways of communicating your needs, by breaking down the deep-rooted, reinforced interactional patterns that are present. With the use of non-violent communication, you and your partner will learn how to successfully identify and express your needs in ways they can more successfully be fulfilled by one another.
