My Approach to Helping
My approach to helping people is rooted in the belief that trust between client and counsellor is paramount. If trust is lacking, a therapist's ability to identify negative themes and patterns in your life will be limited. With 35 years of experience in a range of roles and settings, I'm convinced that people want to feel heard, cared about, and genuinely supported to improve their lives. Although I bring a range of skills and approaches to counselling, ultimately my ability to empathize with clients and their sense of relatability of me, is key to establishing what is a unique partnership. I believe that both client and counsellor are mutually responsible for the effectiveness of the counselling process. When people take the step to get counselling, they are often at a point of feeling worn down, feeling negative about themselves and their relationships and lose site of their strengths and all that life has to offer. I see my role being to help people regain a sense of purpose and strength in their lives and gaining the insights and skills to live life in a more fulfilling and meaningful way. It can be a difficult step to reach out for help, but it can also be life changing!
More Info About My Practice
My credentials are in Social Work and I have obtained a diploma, degree and masters degree in Social Work. I have been in the profession for 35 years. That being said, I have diverse life and professional experiences that I bring to the counselling relationship. I've worked many years in inner-city communities, treatment centres, child welfare, family support services, housing/homelessness, and youth serving organizations supporting those living high-risk lifestyles. I have traveled extensively and also co-manage a charity in Ethiopia. I have experienced a lot and thus there is no judgement in my office. I see all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, sexual identity, or gender, etc., as equal and worthy. As a mother, father, brother, sister, daughter, son, aunt/uncle, etc., we all have purpose in life and my hope is to help people to normalize their situations so they can gain strength to fulfill this purpose to the fullness of their ability.
