It seems starting, maintaining or leaving a relationship is always a challenge. Feelings are involved and with feelings come hurt, pain and fears. I believe a Solution focused Strength-based approach to counseling is a positive way to assist people with their relationship difficulties.
Solution-focused therapy shifts the focus away from a deficit-based view of self (fault finding, past mistakes and the blame game) to encouraging the person to identify what personal qualities and skills make him or her successful.
The solution focused aspect to treatment is to help the person to look forward and center on positive outcomes. I believe a person wants to do well, has the ability to develop workable goals, and is the expert on themselves, and has the capacity to make progress with his or her goals. I help the person to recognize that there is no ?right way? to do things, but there are more effective ways to do things. The Goal of therapy is when a person is confronted with challenges in their life they can develop ideas and behaviors about how he/she may do things more effectively in the future. Life is looked at as a learning experience with challenges to overcome, not as a series of defeats. I help the person to recognize and accept their abilities, strengths, and resources and to use these to improve their lives. The person can then build self-confidence as they recognize the positive aspects of themselves and their preferred outcomes and future life.
A strength-based solution focused approach to therapy would be one that sees the client as a partner whose thinking and viewpoint are valued. A focus on strengths and successes in therapy creates a climate of comfort and safety which contributes to a person?s confidence. One of the most important tasks a therapist faces is that of creating an environment that will allow a person the opportunity to openly communicate both their successes and challenges to overcoming their obstacles. Then assist that person to build on his/her skills to encourage their own growth and ability to solve the problems they want to solve.
What drew me into being a therapist is that I get a chance to help people and what keeps me in this field is that I am able to help people. I know it is sometimes difficult to ask for assistance and that is why I first try to establish a connection and then an understanding of the problems and issues and then help the individual to formulate their own solutions that will work for them. Recovering from a personal problem is often an emotional process that is not without significant impact for a person, having someone there that has experience and understanding can help to minimize the pain. We all carry some negative baggage with us, but if you don't allow yourself time to go through the process of treatment, you may run the risk of caring unresolved problems and issues into your future life. Maybe you will not choose me to help you but please choose to let a professional help you to better health.
