My Approach to Helping
We are best able to change and grow in a supportive, accepting environment. When we feel emotionally safe, we can open up and look at ourselves. My therapy provides this type of environment, with a focus on individual and relationship issues, grounded in evidence-based methods. After an initial assessment, goals are set to specifically address the issues important to you. Many different tools may be offered to help with self understanding, self care and interpersonal relationships. Therapy is experiential, so you may develop new ways of relating in therapy which you can begin to apply in your life. Typically sessions are more frequent at first and, as improvements are made, may be spread out over time. Therapy is collaborative, with the outcome evaluated by the client and myself throughout the process. It is important that you feel respected and cared for during the process. The focus is on your needs.
More Info About My Practice
Three times each year I present the Art and Science of Love workshop for couples. In this two day workshop couples are taught the skills, identified by Dr. John Gottman through over 40 years of research, that happy, healthy couples use to grow closer. You will learn how to improve your friendship and manage conflict more effectively. To learn more, visit my websites listed in the contacts section of my listing.
Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist
Several factors go into choosing the right therapist. You should feel comfortable with the therapist and the process of the therapy. You should also have hope that the therapy will help and lead to positive results. Your needs should be the focus of the therapy and should be dealt with directly. Additionally, the therapist should be licensed, have advanced training in their particular area of interest, and continue training throughout their career.
Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work
A major focus of my work is to help people with the important relationships in their lives. This can take the form of meeting with me individually, with your spouse or partner, or with your family members. I also provide workshops for couples several times a year. My work is influenced by the work of Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Susan Johnson. They have developed comprehensive treatment approaches that are known to help, based on solid research. I am certified in both of their methods of couples therapy. I also have advanced training and certification in individual and family therapy.
