My Approach to Helping
I use a variety of approaches to counseling that are based on my ability to be completely present with the person I am working with. As I listen, I trust my intuition and my knowledge base to find the most helpful strategies to utilize in the moment. I believe the client sets the agenda. I believe without exception in our inherent power to transform! I believe the therapeutic relationship is the key to growth and change. I believe that compassionate acceptance, nonjudgmental support, unconditional positive regard, and caring encouragement are the keys to healing. I will urge the client to take action, but always with the client's commitment and motivation as the primary consideration. I believe in the ability of all humans to accomplish whatever they have set their minds to. A counselor can assist in accelerating that process when the client is ready and can help the client arrive there through unconditional support.
I believe in the intrinsic value of all humans. All people are deserving of respect and kindness by virtue of that innate value. I consider the opportunity to help people to be the highest calling and I treat that honor with reverence, gratitude, and respect.
I know that healing involves the mind, the body, and the spirit and to that end I work with the client to integrate all aspects of our thinking/feeling/behaving nature. I believe it is not what happens to us in life that is significant, but how we feel about and respond to what happens. All humans have incredible resiliency if only encouraged to find it and develop it and that, in my opinion, is our shared task.
I look forward to taking this journey with you.
