My Role as a Therapist

Closely and actively listening is essential to the therapeutic process. Keeping a neutral and nonjudgmental stance that is free of assumptions allows for a deeper understanding of an individual, and guides the process forward as well as promotes progress.

Making observations and interpretations that highlight patterns helps an individual to gain clarity with regard to self and others, which can lead to increased life satisfaction and improved relationships.

What I Usually Need to Know to Help

The duration, frequency, and intensity of symptoms.

It is beneficial to explore internal and external factors that contribute to symptoms.

It is also helpful to get an understanding of the individual's culture, values, and beliefs.

An exploration of past (and/or current) family dynamics and one's role in the family and in any other important relationships is useful.

What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

If the concern has to do with the possibility of experiencing judgment, this is not unusual. In therapy, having a "filter" is typical. With the establishment of a good working alliance, one finds trusting the process easier and concerns about being judged diminish. This fosters a stronger collaboration and lays the groundwork for deeper and more meaningful work.
