My Approach to Helping
I am so glad that you are either taking the first steps toward self-improvement or you are just looking to "smooth the edges" as you continue to make sure you are taking the time to pause and take good care of yourself. Therapy is not always about "fixing problems" and sometimes is more about finding more of the good stuff.
If I'm being honest, whether you're looking for a therapist for the first time or finding a new therapist the process often, for lack of a better term, sucks. I try to make the process as painless as possible through an initial consultation where you can ask any questions you might have and offer you some info about me so you can decide whether I sound like someone you could sit with for an hour in the (physical or virtual) therapy office.
By taking a solution-focused approach, we'll work together to identify strengths and discover new ways to use those strengths to overcome whatever challenges are presenting themselves. I've found that integrating this approach with mindfulness, coping, and relationship skill building are powerful ways to address both long-standing issues as well as those life challenges that may have just arisen.
Research evidence supports the idea that the compatibility and fit between you and your therapist can be the strongest predictor of getting the most out of your counseling experience. I highly value creating a safe space, open communication from both of us, providing support (and, at times, those gentle challenges that we all need), and a caring sense of humor to work through the difficulties in our lives.
If you think my style may be a good fit for your needs, feel free to submit a request for a 15-minute phone consultation and we can get started from there!
More Info About My Practice
My practice is currently 100% telehealth based using a secure, HIPAA compliant platform that can be accessed via browser, iphone, or android app.
I am hoping to transition into a hybrid model that allows for a preference of in-person or telehealth sessions as soon as in-person sessions can be conducted safely.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
Although I consider myself a generalist who has experience working with a wide range of people presenting with a variety of issues, there are several specialty areas where I could consider myself a "specialist."
I have a passion for working with men's issues. Although there may be data supporting the notion that less men seek out counseling services, this is a trend that has thankfully started to change in recent years. Working from a solution-based approach is particularly useful to help men utilize their own strengths in order to overcome unique personal, relational, career, and life challenges.
I previously have worked in several college counseling centers and enjoy working with college-aged adults. Young adults face a number of unique challenges, and it's a genuine pleasure to help those in this age group manage a number of life transitions, changing relationships, conflicts, and other issues that arise during this time.
I also have experience working with service members, veterans, and their families. Whether it be issues related to transitions to and from military service, relationship concerns, or other mental issues including anxiety, depression, and PTSD - I recognize the uniqueness of those impacted by the military life and will tailor our work accordingly.
