My Approach to Helping

My name is Miguel Lopez and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas. I provide telehealth therapy all across Texas. I received my Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio where I received the knowledge, experience and skills working with an array of individuals seeking counseling services.

I have worked with individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, sexual identity and gender related issues, trauma, grief and loss. Additionally, I have worked with children, young adults, and elderly adults with cognitive and developmental related issues such as Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and Autism.

My counseling style is Eclectic. This means I take from multiple therapeutic modalities and incorporate them for each specific client need. Not one size fits all. The modalities I am currently most comfortable and knowledgeable in are Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Existential Therapy.

My goal as your counselor is to provide you with the building blocks and skills needed to work through the day to day issues we face. It’s nice to have extra tools to add to your tool belt. I will assist you by providing you with questions and reflections to become introspective, insightful and mindful of who you are and what you want; as well as, challenge you to overcome undesired behaviors and increase desired ones.

I utilize empathy and humor in my sessions to help build a strong therapeutic relationship with my clients. I am a person who loves to learn new things and build many interests and hobbies. This allows me to adapt to my client as best as I can and learn from them as much as they learn skills from me.

Outside of counseling, you may find me gardening, knitting way too much, bowling, and enjoying the company of my partner, two cats and dog :)

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

You definitely want to choose a therapist that aligns with your core beliefs, interests and values; as well someone who is knowledgeable, empathetic, relatable, authentic and genuine. Humor goes a long way as well!

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

Therapy can be very nerve wracking, so let?s walk through what you can expect in a typical session with me!

Individual Therapy

Intake sessions are our initial session together. In this session I will ask some questions to get to know you and your presenting interest in coming to therapy. This session may last anywhere between 30 - 50 mins. Rapport building is developed during our first session as well. :)

Before the end of our intake, we will discuss frequency of sessions. This may be weekly, multiple times a week, every other week, once a month or as needed (totally dependent on severity of concerns as well as financial means).

Relationship Therapy

Similar to individual counseling we will have a 30 - 50 min intake session. During this session, I will gain information from all parties involved and assess next steps as well as discuss frequency of therapy. Prior to the end of the intake session we will schedule individual counseling sessions.

Post intake, I recommend seeing couples individually at least once. During these individual sessions we will discuss history of the relationship, individual wants and expectations as well as a brief history of individual mental health related stressors that may contribute to the relationship struggle.

After the individual sessions we will go back to our regular relationship therapy sessions and discuss next steps and plans of action.

*the rate for the individual sessions in relationship counseling is the same as individual counseling ($110)

Please note: I do not counsel couples+ who are in an ongoing affair.
