My Approach to Helping

When we experience pain in our lives; difficult relationships. stress, anxiety, frustration with our business or work environment, feeling stuck, overwhelmed, distracted, unsatisfied, reactive, unable to express our wants and needs effectively etc. we often reach out for solutions that feel familiar, but might not actually be helpful (and sometimes make things worse!).

Like many therapists and coaches, I went to school to learn these approaches as a way to understand my own family dynamics, how they influence my current thoughts and behaviors, and to find tools to help myself through difficult times. I find that the best teachers are not the ones that have the most information; they are the ones that have filtered that information through their own experiences, tracked their own progress, are open to learning from other perspectives, have honed their skills and share from the heart.

My therapy style is very down to earth, real, experiential, collaborative and practical - and often involves a lot of humor. I invite ALL of you into the room and I bring all of myself as well. You have invited me into your life because of something that you feel I can offer and I take that very seriously. We get clear right off the bat and we work toward the goals that you feel are important at this time in your life. I tend to take a brief therapy and coaching approach. I believe that your time is valuable. I have many clients that have come to me with a specific concern, have learned some tools to address that concern and integrated them into their lives in a very brief amount of time. Many will come back when a new concern arises that they would like to explore at a later date and some got the tools they needed and continue to thrive long aftet we have ended services. A few have stayed with me for longer periods of time as they learn, practice, integrate and open up deeper levels of understanding about the impact of their early childhood experiences on their current life.

On a practical level, I am a trauma specialist and I blend solution-focused approaches using evidence-based practices such as TF-CBT, EFT, MI, Triple P, DBT and Clinical Hypnotherapy with creative and experiential tools like sandtray, art and drama therapy, storytelling, myth and metaphor and Gestalt work. Creative approaches help us access the wise and balanced parts of ourselves. In my coaching practice I blend strategies for identifying limiting beliefs, creating a plan of action to get to your future goals and teach women to drop from their heads into their hearts and bodies through inuition building and embodiment practices.

My mission is to guide others on a journey back to their authentic selves to reclaim the vitality and confidence that is their birthright. One way back is through the exploration of the origin of some of our limiting beliefs, many of which were formed before the age of 6, and continue to affect our lives today. Research has shown that the majority of our behaviors are directed by our subconscious mind. By definition, the subconscious is that which is below our awareness. Parts of ourselves are 'frozen' in time at the moment of these impactful experiences and we are continuing to act out or limit our choices based on experiences that for some of us occurred decades ago. If it is time for you to recover those lost aspects of yourself and if you are ready to uncover your true essence, then you have come to the right place.

Life can be challenging and serious at times. It can also be full of joy, tenderness and excitement. I like to help people access the full range of their emotions, while learning to tolerate distress, communicate effectively, and find self-acceptance and fulfillment. I specialize in group work.

I am a firm believer in the value of PLAY. My clients know me for my humor, my compassion and my willingness to hold space for some BIG emotions.

I am a therapist as well as a speaker and coach. When we connect we can determine which path is right for you. My coaching practice focuses on helping you discover, explore and release barriers to showing up fully in your business, increasing your impact and making more money. Sometimes old wounding can contribute to current business struggles.

I am certified in both Clinical Hypnotherapy and EFTMatrix Reimprinting. Both of these very empowering modalities are quick, effective and can be taught as self-healing tools to take home and do with yourself to reinforce the healing you have already experienced or to create new healthy patterns. For those of you who have experienced trauma, both of these modalities can help one address deep trauma and core negative beliefs without having to 're-experience' the trauma. These modalities can be used in either therapy or coaching.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

I can empathize with the host of challenges that come from experiencing childhood trauma and trauma as an adult.

I know what it is like holding onto old patterns of behavior that worked while in the midst of difficult experiences or trauma but no longer serve the person I want to be; stress responses, reactivity, defensiveness, negative thinking, anxiety, painful memories, isolation, rigidity, etc.. I can understand the doubt that comes with each new relationship as one replays the past and tries to reconcile it with the relationship that is directly in front of them. (It can be done!) I can reflect on the confusion of wondering if what I am thinking and feeling is a result of past conditioning or is in fact what I am really thinking and feeling right now. I know how difficult it can be to stay connected to one's body when the body was a place of pain. I know the struggle of trying to change thoughts so that they are more effective in helping me through this journey called life.

I believe my own journey of healing, which began at a very early age, and my lifelong commitment to personal growth, are what provide me with the insight and creativity to support others going through the challenge of healing from childhood abuse and adult trauma. I have walked through the fire and come out the other side healthier, stronger, more flexible and creative, less defended and more loving. My goal is to support others in finding their own unique path toward healing.

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

I believe that a fairly intensive approach helps to support one in becoming goal-directed, trying out new strategies and seeing faster results. Consistency in therapy is paramount. Weekly therapy and coaching is best practice to really get to the root of a problem, explore and rebuild. I do not believe that therapy or coaching needs to be a super lengthy process, although it depends on the initial reasons for engaging in either service. Transition takes time and some people have already done a lot of work on themselves and others are just beginning the process.

My goal is to send you on your way with tools that you feel confident using in your everyday life. This can be hard to do if sessions are too spread out or are inconsistent. As far as total length of sessions - On the one hand, a long-standing set of symptoms or business challenges can take some time to unravel. On the other, many people may just need some short-term and directed therapy or coaching to address a recent event , to remind themselves of the progress that they have made or to gain some new skills to address an area of concern. Some know exactly where their "issue" comes from and are ready to confront it head-on. EFTMatrix Reimprinting and Clinical Hypnotherapy are both designed to be symptom-focused; i.e. once the symptom goes away, so does the client. They may return if they have another, different symptom or problem to address or for a "tune-up". Specific symptom reduction could take between three and 10 sessions. More complex and interwoven symptoms may take longer. I will work with you to determine the most likely treatment progression depending on the issues that you bring into treatment and a thorough assessment of your family and mental health history.
