Livable lives. A modest proposal? When someone is down and out, it feels like the impossible dream. People do not come to therapy because they feel good or things are going their way. Something is troubling them, they are usually miserable. The thing is, they become their troubles to the exclusion of their strengths. Everything good becomes a dim memory. Worry captures our attention. Hopelessness dictates the future. Social withdrawal is preferred. In that sense, we become one dimensional. We objectify/label ourselves as bad, inept, less than etc. We lose our subjective multidimensional sense of self which is a mixture of strengths and weaknesses, highs and lows, likes and dislikes, a more relational way of being with ourselves and the rest of the world.

Therapy should help you re-engage and begin to uncouple yourself from old patterns of behaving, thinking and feeling, that are failing you in the present. That's the goal, to once again create a "livable life."

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Facing your problems is a strength. Every stage of life presents new challenges. Independence is a great thing, however, people may confuse asking for help with being helpless and dependent. Remember the story of the emperor's new clothes. One can sometimes not see the obvious because their defenses create obstructions to having healthy self-awareness. Therapy can be viewed as being a blind spot detector. If the therapist helps with gaining greater self-awareness through decreasing the blind spots, the payoff is being better able to negotiate through the world. With that comes greater independence. Where's the shame in that?
