Oasis biography: Michael F. Nias, J.D., MSW, LCSW
Michael F. Nias, recently arrived at The Therapeutic Oasis of the Palm Beaches from the University of Florida’s, Department of Psychiatry. As an assistant professor in the department, he taught courses in law and medicine, bioethics, and addiction. He trained and mentored third year residents in Psychiatry and he was the primary psychotherapist at the Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic.
Michael is a legally and psychodynamically trained behavioral therapist who uses evidenced based therapies to support his clients reaching optimal well being in their life. He specializes in working with young and older adults with serious mental health disorders, mood disorders and personality disorders, as well as people working through addictive disorders. He has worked with athletes at all levels including college and professionals to reach peak performance by helping them to remove mental, physical, and emotional blocks that hinder personal performance.
Michael has always believed in working from a bio-psycho-social and strengths perspective, which enables his clients to obtain maximum health and happiness in their lives. His legal training allows him to support his clients working through challenging mental and emotional court related issues such as separation-divorce, child custody, co-parenting and more. His multidisciplinary background with expert training and experience in evidence based therapies including psychological techniques EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), CISD (Critical Incident Stress Debriefing), MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) helps his clients working with trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, recovery from addiction and family and relationship concerns.
A strong proponent of academic medicine he has been on the faculty or associated with several universities including the University of Florida, the University of Maryland, Howard University and Catholic University. He has taught, mentored and or supervised throughout his career that has included working with two Federal agencies, executive director of a mental health and substance abuse agency and Child and Family Services Agency of Washington D.C.. He is certified in the state of Florida to supervise master’s level registered interns in clinical social work and marriage and family therapy.
