My treatment approach is evidenced-based and individualized, including cognitive-behavioral techniques (i.e. CBT and DBT) and family systems. I work on guiding my clients to modify maladaptive thinking, behavioral patterns and to develop well-established coping skills. Foundation of our therapeutic journey will include exploring all aspects of oneself and revisiting past experiences so as to build long-lasting self-acceptance and self-compassion. When working on goals, I like to find ways to apply new ideas to everyday situations in order to create more meaningful and sustained change, to enhance growth and to empower the individual. In my sessions, I plan to provide a safe and trusting atmosphere where you can regain your strength, hope, and acceptance. We will be working collaboratively to develop a healthy and stable road-map that will help you lead a fulfilling life.

More Info About My Practice

I have had the privilege of working with clients in a variety of settings with dual diagnosis. I have extensive experience providing individual, family and group therapy to adults with mental illness (e.g. Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, Depression) and addiction. For the past five years, I worked with clients at a non-12-step drug and alcohol treatment center at an inpatient/residential and outpatient level. As part of my pre-doctoral internship, I obtained training experience at an acute-inpatient psychiatric unit treating adolescents and adults with diverse backgrounds and variety of diagnostic symptoms including self-harm behaviors, mood, and anxiety disorders. For my doctoral thesis, I conducted a literature review on The Social Experiences of Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which was later published in the Los Angeles Psychologist March-April 2012 Edition. My work uses a multicultural approach that focuses on the effects of one's ethnic background on interpersonal interaction and patterns of behavior and development. I was born and raised in Turkey and therefore understands the effects of biculturalism and acculturation. I speak Turkish fluently and can conduct therapy in this language.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

For the last five years, I worked in both residential and outpatient treatment programs for the treatment of drug and alcohol dependence. During this time, I had extensive experience in working on the underlying issues such as trauma, co-dependency, and dysfunctional family systems. Recovery is stronger and long-lasting when it involves the support system. When working with couples, I utilize emotion-focused therapy model to help clients better understand the "dance" they engage in and practice tools to improve the connection and attachment.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

In our journey of life, we all need a time and place to pull aside, take a break, do a check-up or sometimes just ask for directions. Often when we finally get the courage to do so it's because the obstacles we have faced on our road have become overwhelming or difficult to handle. Therapy can be that place for us to examine our journey, where we came from, where we are and where we like to go.
