My Approach to Helping

Do you need someone to talk to but feel too uncomfortable or afraid to talk to a stranger about your problems?

My name is Melissa Gates and I am a registered psychologist experienced at building strong therapeutic relationships built on empathy, respect, compassion and collaboration. I believe in building a strong relationship with a client, first and foremost, so that you will feel safe and comfortable sharing your most personal feelings with me. I believe in creating a safe and supportive environment in which clients may openly explore their problems and struggles.

My approach to therapy is client-centered, meaning that the client drives the therapy and I am there to support this process. Some of the problems that I can help clients work through include: depression, stress and anxiety, anger management, health concerns and issues related to chronic pain, relationship issues, self-esteem issues, social anxiety, addictions, phobias, self-harming behaviours, life-coaching, and issues stemming from past or present trauma. I have a great deal of experience helping clients learn coping skills, helping clients identify and cope with difficult emotions, and helping them identify and change unhealthy behaviours.

In addition to client-centered (Humanistic) therapy, I also use techniques from various other therapies in order to tailor your therapy to you. Some of these therapeutic modalities include: Cognitive-Behaviour therapy (CBT), Behaviourism, Emotion-Focused therapy, Dialectical Behaviour therapy (DBT), mindfulness, Art therapy, Solution Focused therapy, Positive psychology, and psychodynamic therapy.

I pride myself on providing a judgement-free therapeutic environment in which clients can talk openly about any issues or problems they are having, and I work with adult and adolescent clients of all genders, orientations, and from all cultural and religious backgrounds.

Please feel free to call to book an appointment or for a free consultation.

Your insurance company will likely cover some of your sessions and I direct bill to some insurance companies. I accept debit, Mastercard, Visa, Cheque, and Cash.
