What's My Approach to Therapy?

In photography, illuminating brilliance refers to “adjusting a photo to make it look richer and more vibrant, brightening dark areas, pulling in highlights, and adding contrast to reveal hidden detail.” I find this to be a wonderful analogy to the work done in therapy. The photo already has everything it needs to be the best version of itself, and the same is true for you. You are not broken, damaged, or bad. My approach to therapy is to identify the parts of yourself that are causing you distress and to work to understand them through a loving and nonjudgmental lens. Utilizing interventions such as internal family systems (IFS), we will work to understand and appreciate all parts of you, and begin to understand the coping mechanisms that are still in place that are no longer serving you.

Many individuals that I work with have experienced some form of trauma and also carry a great deal of shame. I utilize a variety of trauma interventions, which we will discuss, and together discuss the approach we both feel is the best fit. Examples of these interventions are eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), brainspotting, accelerated resolution therapy (ART), as well as IFS.

My approach to therapy is very effective with individuals in recovery from substance use issues, those who would like to improve their self-esteem, self-acceptance, and self-awareness, and anyone who is burdened with shame.

Trauma work is heavy, and it is hard work. I try to make the experience as comfortable as possible with reclining chairs, weighted blankets, snacks, drinks, laughter, and fidgets galore.

Self-determination is an incredibly important part of therapy, meaning your goals, decisions, and actions are your own. I would be honored to walk alongside you on your journey to help you achieve whatever your goals may be.
