About Meridian

Meridian is a city in Ada County, Idaho. It was founded in 1893 by Eliza and Christian Zenger. The city covers a land area of around 27 square miles.

Meridian has a population of 99,900 people. The population grew by 31% from 2010 to 2017. It is the second largest city in Idaho and the fastest growing city in the state. Over 97% of people in Meridian are United States citizens (compared to a national average of 93%).

About 6% of Meridian residents were born in a foreign country. The city’s population is 88% white, 7% Hispanic, 2% Asian, and 1% black. Seven percent of residents speak a language other than English at home. The city has 3,100 Spanish speakers and 600 Chinese speakers.  

On average, people in Meridian earn an annual wage of $28,900. The median household income is $64,300. Nine percent of Meridian residents live below the poverty line.

Mental Health in Meridian

Substance abuse is a major issue in the city of Meridian and Ada County. In Meridian, drug addiction is the leading cause of accidental death. It accounts for over two million visits to the emergency room each year. Marijuana use is especially common among residents of Meridian. Almost half of the adults in the city report using marijuana at least once, and 10% of city residents have used another illicit drug.

In Ada County, the rate of drug overdose deaths has risen from roughly 50 a year to over 100 a year. Between January and May 2018, overdose-related deaths in the county occurred at a rate of one every five days. Most overdose deaths in the county occur among white males in their 40s. Many of these individuals received prescription opioids after surgery.
