My experience has taught me to be a good listener and to be flexible in meeting your needs. I am more than what I term "a how does that feel to you?" psychologist. My efforts are directed toward specific, concrete, mutually agreed upon goals. I will help you identify clear- cut criteria of progress. I will encourage you to critique your progress and will be willing to change strategies when clearly they clearly are not working. Therapy will be a mutual, cooperative partnership. No approach provides all the answers and no one knows you as well as you know yourself. I will focus upon building your strengths without obsessing over your weaknesses. I believe that clinical diagnoses are useful but can be detrimental when they pigeon-hole you, ignore individual differences, and are interpreted as explaining symptoms and behavior. Applying a diagnostic label is often interpreted as implying that the problem is irreversible. Most psychological symptoms are learned and what has been learned can be unlearned. Even biologically-based symptoms have a psychological component that can be altered. However, not every therapist is successful with every client. If things are not working I will be honest in pointing that out and help you find someone better suited to your problem. I do not anticipate that will be the case. I continue to marvel at and learn from the courage and perseverance of clients who have suffered adversity. Symptoms are not a weakness but a survival mechanism.
