My Approach to Helping

There are some simple but profound moments that are embedded in my mind from the wisdom passed on through mentors, including professors in my graduate program. One that was stated in class, to paraphrase, is the only thing that is wrong with you is you think something is wrong with you. That goes along with James Allen's quote regarding how a man thinks -- "As he thinks, so he is; as he continues to think, so he remains." In our current cultural correctness we would reference this to all humans. Also, Louise Hay states "change your thoughts, change your life". I believe humans have the ability to change and how we think is the foundation to build change upon. Another concept I believe is people often seek professional counsel when relationships are in trouble, including relationship with self, which is the springboard that we use to interact in all relationships in our lives. I like to work as a collaborative team with clients to help them understand these concepts so they can reach the goals in their lives.

What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

One can have a physical ailment and there is no stigma or shame in consulting a medical professional. This is not so when it comes to our Mental Health. What many do not understand is that Mind and Body are intricately connected, and when one is off balance it effects the other. It takes courage to reach out and ask a stranger for help with struggles in our most private lives. Consulting a trained professional who is a neutral party can help gain a different prospective when we are stuck in the box. There is no magic in therapy, just the efforts of the client and therapist working together for a desired outcome.
