My Approach to Helping
My goal in meeting with you is to find out who you are and to help you become all you can be. I believe that life flows best when we are attuned to our feelings, thoughts and desires; when we are true to our values and ideals; and when we behave in ways that reflect our real selves. I will strive to help you maximize your potential in important areas of your life by modifying those counter-productive coping styles, belief systems, and behaviors that get in the way of meaningful living, and by awakening you to new possibilities. In sessions, I will help you feel comfortable with silent moments during which you may take time to deepen your feelings and thoughts, but I will also actively engage you in a dynamic dialogue about your feelings and thoughts. If you seek advice, I will give it if it appears to be in your best interest to do so. I will help you problem-solve and focus on the here and now, while creating a safe place for you to move freely among the past, present and future; between events of the day and dreams of tomorrow; and between memories that haunt and hopes for transformation. In today's therapy world there is no place for a one-size-fits-all mentality. We will create your therapy experience together, attuning ourselves to your evolving needs as we go along. Whether you stay for the short- or longer-term, we will try to make this an experience that is satisfying for you.
More Info About My Practice
Please know that seeking out help when you need it is a valuable coping skill, one that will serve you well now and in the future. We all encounter problems in living and what better way to address them than to consult with a therapist who will empathically work with you to move through critical life challenges such as sadness, worry, anxiety, indecision, job and relationship issues, loss, grief, and all of life's many other difficult moments.
In addition to providing individual and couples therapy in my practice, I also offer supervision to other therapists. I have a particular interest in working with new therapists who are struggling to find their own voice in the therapeutic process and who, perhaps, have not had truly rewarding supervisory experiences to date. As I remember well the particular fears and anxieties of being a new clinician, I am very sensitive to the vulnerabilities of new practitioners in our field. I will help you to integrate theory and practice, your own voice with those of your mentors, and your own personal being with the professional therapist you strive to become.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
I feel particularly adept at helping people step out of the roles and restrictions that have been imposed upon them (whether by upbringing, cultural norms, or counter-productive coping styles) and into a freer, more expansive living space. I deeply believe that people need to experience themselves as fully and richly as possible, and that being true to oneself, and living accordingly, is an important ingredient to life satisfaction.
