My Approach to Helping
I will help you identify and overcome the internal obstacles that keep you stuck in place that feels distressful and unhappy. You may be struggling with a specific, identifiable, problem, or a more complex situation that is difficult to define (such as a vague sense that something is wrong, feeling paralyzed in your life, not sleeping well because you can't stop thinking). We can make sense of the things that seems tumultuous and overwhelming, and as a result, their power over you will diminish.

I believe psychotherapy is the most effective means of overcoming emotional pain and experiencing true freedom in your life. Through therapy, I will help you understand your conflicts, recognize your strengths, and develop the fortitude to approach your life with increased clarity and direction. In effective therapy, we build self-knowledge, which is vital, because when you truly understand yourself, you also understand others, and you are less likely to be hurt by their words or actions. We also build resilience. Resilience gives you the capacity to face the difficulties in your life with confidence, and the knowledge that no matter what happens, you will actually be OK.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
I love learning about a person's subjective experience - their feelings and interpretations of their world. Everyone who comes to my office teaches me something unique and important. I love learning about them, and being able to use that knowledge to help them understand themselves. Also, many people begin therapy feeling broken and ashamed. I so enjoy their reaction when they realize they are not fundamentally flawed, and have more control over their lives than they previously believed.
My Therapy Focus
I am skilled at understanding human dynamics, and can bring clarity to your mental turmoil or confusion. I am comfortable with all lifestyles, and will approach you with interest, compassion and non-judgmental curiosity. In my practice, I see individual adults and adolescents as well as couples of all persuasions.
I have formal training in Mentalization-based therapy, psychodynamic/attachment therapy, and humanistic clinical psychology. I also provide expertise in dream analysis, meditation, cognitive and behavioral techniques, personality assessment, parenting, and physical fitness.
In addition, I have been a licensed attorney for 20 years. I often find that having experienced professional life outside of psychology enhances my understanding of occupational, business and career/family balancing issues. I also hold a certification in personal coaching, which I am able to incorporate into our relationship as needed.
