My Approach to Helping
My approach to counseling is grounded in a person-centered philosophy, meaning I will follow your lead. I can never fully place myself in your shoes or walk the road you have walked, but I will do my best to enter your world with you and engage with your experiences. We will take this journey together, both putting in the work necessary for you to meet your goals.
I am open to working with children as early as age two, adolescents, and adults of all ages. I utilize a variety of techniques including child-centered play therapy (developmental ages 2-12), expressive arts, mindfulness, and bibliotherapy. I find this process is most successful when you are willing to fully open up to your internal, emotional world within a safe and supportive environment. This process can be scary and overwhelming at times, and I will remain by your side during these times of struggle and help you find mechanisms to ease your suffering.
Through truly engaging with your internal world and learning how to navigate these emotions in your external world, you can meet your goals and lead a more rewarding and fulfilling life. This experience is always about YOU, never about me.
More Info About My Practice
I understand how difficult it is to put yourself in a position of vulnerability and reach out for help. I applaud you for taking that first step, and with that understanding in mind, promise to work with you at a pace and in a way that is comfortable for you.
As a counselor, I've been in the unique position of working in both school and clinical settings. During my education at Boise State University, I had the opportunity to provide counseling services at the elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels while receiving specialized training in child-centered play therapy and expressive arts.
I have also worked as a teacher, allowing me to truly understand the educational setting in which our children spend so much time. I have experience in clinical settings as well, primarily in the substance abuse field.
I am particularly passionate about working with individuals with anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and multicultural identity development (including, racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and spiritual identity).
