My Approach to Helping

What's your 'normal'? Has 'just getting by' become a way of life?

As we struggle to keep going under the weight of anxiety, depression and mental distress, living can take a back seat to surviving.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

With an extensive background in trauma, attachment, and neurology, I go beyond psychoanalytic and talk therapy - because unfortunately for most of us, were we able to think our way out of our emotional state, we would have done it long ago.

By combining cognitive, relational and somatic psychotherapy with attachment theory, EMDR, IFS and sensorimotor techniques, I help clients move past talking about their experience to processing through it. The goal is never "coping with" but "moving past" - thriving, not surviving.

More Info About My Practice

We are meaning-making beings.

Primarily unconsciously, and largely directed by implicit memory, we observe our external reality, interpret it, and attach meaning to it. We create a subjective internal experience.

But the meaning we make depends on how we've learned to organize and interpret the world.

And central to this organization are our beliefs. "I'm safe," "I belong," "I'm worthy," and "I'm enough," give rise to a very different organization of experience than their counterparts.

Change the organization. Change the meaning. Change the experience.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

To put it simply -

1. Do they have the relevant experience and expertise?
2. Does their approach align with your goals?
3. On a gut level, do they feel good?

1 and 2 are of practical importance; children are a whole different ball game than adults. Trauma therapy requires a different skill set than marriage counselling. Solution focused therapies take a different approach than depth oriented therapies. Finding a therapist with the right experience and whose approach fits goals will ensure you get what you want out of therapy.

3 is a non-negotiable. The therapeutic relationship is the foundation on which everything else is possible. Even the best psychological techniques in the world won't stand a chance if the relationship isn't safe to be open.

I believe strongly in the therapeutic alliance, which is why I offer every client a complimentary consultation prior to commencing treatment. You need a chance to get a sense of me and whether I'd be a good fit, and I need a chance to get to know you and whether I have the skills to help.
