My Approach to Helping

To the outside world, you have it all together. However, deep down inside you are struggling to get through your daily activities and often feel overwhelmed and hopeless. Your inner voice is constantly telling you all the ways that you aren't good enough. This voice constantly reminds you of all the ways you don’t measure up to social expectations. Frankly you're exhausted and are seeking to regain control over your life. You are used to focusing all your time and energy on others and always put yourself last. You feel guilty when you tell someone no, even though you feel depleted. You may even feel resentful to others who don't respect your boundaries.

I want to help you feel more comfortable in your own skin and to stop worrying about what others think. We can work together to help you become your most authentic self, even if you aren't sure what that looks like. The goal is for you to finally enjoy your life on your terms free of judgment. We will work together to examine and challenge some of these negative thoughts that may lead you to a place of self-judgment. Throughout this journey, I will help you to silence your inner critic and work towards developing self-acceptance. Together, we will work together to explore your emotions, how to process them in a healthy manner and also to learn coping tools to help manage feelings of discomfort, anxiety or stress. My style is compassionate, empathetic and culturally sensitive. Life often throws things at us when we least expect it, and my goal is to help you navigate these challenges with compassion and grace.

I am a champion for Culturally Sensitive Treatment and often assess how our cultural values and beliefs affect how we perceive mental health issues and how we approach treatment. I also look at how our cultural upbringing can also serve as a barrier with seeking and accepting help. I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Jamaica; therefore, I understand the immigrant experience and all the challenges that come along with adjusting to a new cultural environment. You may feel disconnected, uncomfortable and like you don't fit in anywhere. However, we all have the capacity to thrive and heal once equipped with the right coping tools. Your experiences and feelings are valid, despite what others may have told you.
