My Approach to Helping
I take an eclectic approach to counseling, tailoring treatment methods to best meet each individual client's goals. For some clients an insight-oriented or psychodynamic approach works well. Others may benefit from a combination of relational or behavioral approaches, coupled with approaches designed to teach concrete skills for addressing issues. Still others find that a supportive and compassionate listener is what is needed to help them reach their own answers. I will work with you to assess your treatment needs and identify the best methods for meeting them.
Regardless of which theoretical model is used, I place a great deal of emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and believe very strongly in the importance of collaboration between client and therapist and empowerment of the individual. The foundation to my approach is client-centered and non-judgmental, and always comes from a place of support and compassion.
More Info About My Practice
I currently run a 6 week divorce support group, "Delving into Divorce," designed for women who are separated, divorced, or contemplating either. Group time is divided between discussions on specific topics relating to separation, divorce or relationships; as well as time to share personal issues or problems that are of concern to any individual group member.
I currently accept Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois PPO
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
Divorce Counseling: I began my career as a practicing attorney representing women in abusive relationships in order of protection and divorce proceedings. As a therapist, I use my legal and therapeutic background to provide education, support, and guidance to clients prior to, during, and after divorce. Divorce is a traumatic life event that can have a ripple effect on nearly every aspect of one's life. I offer clients both concrete help to better understand the legal system and what they might expect from the process, while also working to gain deeper insight into what happened in the relationship and start to heal from the experience.
Trauma and Abuse: For the past 20 years, I have worked with women seeking to heal from the traumatic effects of domestic abuse and sexual abuse/assault. My work in the domestic violence field included providing counseling, guidance, and support in courtrooms, shelters, outreach settings, and counseling centers. As an Illinois Certified Domestic Violence Professional (ICDVP), my extensive experience in the field allows me to understand the dynamics of trauma and abuse and how they affect one's ability to function. I work with clients to re-build their lives and begin to heal and trust again, to find a renewed sense of safety within the world. I believe that starts with a supportive, sensitive and trustworthy therapeutic partnership.
