My Approach to Helping
Helping people who are suffering has always been my passion. In my first career, I was helping people by educating them, but I always wanted to understand their stories and why they were acting and feeling certain ways. So, I became a therapist, so I could work with people individually and in small groups to help them find answers to their most difficult and challenging problems. I am trained to use the cognitive-behavioral therapies, including CBT and CPT, as well as EMDR for trauma. I believe the way we think about our issues affects our feelings and behaviors. These approaches are very solution oriented and give people the tools they need to tackle tough issues. I also like to use expressive arts, such as writing, and mindfulness-based stress reduction to help clients when they enjoy them.
More Info About My Practice
I began my practice, Peace of Mind Wellness, LLC, after working with organ transplant patients and their families at the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute in Washington, D.C. My position as a counselor and social worker with patients coming to the out-patient clinic in need of a liver was to guide them through a very arduous and difficult process that could save their lives. It was extremely challenging for many patients and their families and it was my privilege to help them. I worked with my patients prior, during, and after hospitalization. This experience is one of the reasons I am working with clients managing chronic illness and why I am focused on addiction and recovery. Many of the patients who need a liver transplant do so because of substance use. Addiction is a disease, but it is a preventable one and patients can recover from it with the proper assistance.
My Therapy Focus
My specialties are trauma, post-traumatic stress, addiction and recovery, managing chronic illness and helping people adjust to life's transitions. I use the Veteran's Administration approved therapies CPT and EMDR to help military veterans and others who have experienced trauma, including victims of human trafficking and natural disasters, first responders, police, fire fighters and journalists. I work with clients/patients ages 17 and up individually and in small groups. I am an addiction counselor for individuals and lead groups for people recovering from addictions of all kinds.
