Maybe you're overwhelmed by the expectations of life. Or maybe you're in a funk that just won't quit, or struggling with worries and fears. Whatever it is, you're here because you'd like some help. I'm glad you're here! I'd like to help. My approach to counseling can be defined by:

Compassionate acceptance - My first concern is making sure you feel understood, seen and accepted just as you are. That takes courage and vulnerability from you. From me it takes listening with compassion and seeking to understand what characteristics, beliefs and experiences have made you the unique person you are today.

Multi-faceted perspective: I believe mental health is affected by many things - relationships, physical health, beliefs, loss, etc. We will examine different areas that could be contributing to what you're experiencing so we set you up for the best chance of success.

Collaboration: I think of counseling as working together to uncover the root of what's affecting you then building a plan together to address each area.

Strengths-Based: You have been made for a purpose and have strengths and resources that are unique to you alone. I can help you discover and hone your strengths which can become another tool in your hand to win the battles you're facing.

Positive change: Sometimes there are underlying issues that get us stuck. These might be lies you've been believing about yourself, others and God; or a loss that you've had that affected you deeply or a lack of knowing the best way to deal with difficult emotions and circumstances. We will work together to uncover underlying issues and replace them with positive, forward-moving strategies that build joy, self-acceptance, peace, freedom and hope.

Whatever you're facing, we can work together to harness and build on your strengths to help you overcome the adversity that life continually throws our way. Call me, I would love to talk with you about what you're facing and how I can help!

More Info About My Practice

I work with children as well as adults. Providing good therapy to children requires a different approach than talking. Your child most likely hasn't developed the ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings verbally (at least not as well as the adults in their life). But that doesn't mean that they don't have emotions, thoughts, questions and difficulties that they need help processing. The approach I take with kids involves expressive games, therapeutic activities and fun! Kids do best with hands on experiences. These activities allow them to begin to explore what is going on inside. Once they have this awareness they can begin to learn how to identify their different emotions and ultimately use strategies to express and manage their difficult emotions in a constructive way. As a caregiver, you will be regularly included in the process since you have the most constant interaction with your child, you have the most influence over their change and healing. You will learn about the developmental stages your child is experiencing and you will receive tools and techniques to help build the connection you have and foster the healing your child needs.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

I get excited to come to work each day. We all face difficulty but when someone faces difficulties with me through counseling, it's an incredible honor. Being trusted to join with another person in the struggle of growth, walking with another person through adversity, the moment when a person believes deep down that they are valuable and sees how incredibly strong they are, witnessing the courage it takes to face the underlying "stuff," seeing real freedom arrive, being used to help someone receive the healing their heart needed, all of these are aspects of counseling that make me love what I do.
