About Northbrook

Northbrook is a village in Cook County, Illinois. It has a land area of 13 square miles. The town was incorporated as Shermerville in 1901. In 1923, the village held a contest to find a new name, and the winning entry was Northbrook.

Northbrook has 33,400 inhabitants. The ethnic composition of the population is 83% white, 12% Asian, 2% Hispanic, and less than 1% black. Roughly 1,700 residents are military veterans. 

Eighteen percent of people in Northbrook are foreign-born. Around 22% of residents speak a foreign language at home. Northbrook is home to 1,500 Korean speakers, 1,200 Russian speakers, and 900 Chinese speakers. 

Around 68% of adults over age 25 have a bachelor’s degree. The median household income in Northbrook is $115,200. Eighty-seven percent of families own their home. Less than 3% of Northbrook residents live in poverty.

Mental Health in Northbrook

Mental health services in Northbrook are supervised by the Counseling Services Unit (CSU). The CSU offers criminal court advocacy for survivors of violent crimes. The CSU works with police to provide crisis intervention, short-term counseling, and referrals to social service programs. Services are offered free of charge to residents in the community.

The Counseling Services Unit also oversees a community service program. If a young offender (under 21) commits a first-time offense, they may be able to do community service instead of jail time. The offense must be nonviolent, such as underage drinking or theft. A counselor may also refer the youth to appropriate mental health services.
