My Approach to Helping

We all go through seasons of life in which we need help navigating through challenges and dark times. I help people wrestle with the pain that has brought them to therapy in order to overcome it and live the life they want to live.

In counseling, we work together and build off your strengths to address the challenges you face. Our work is collaborative and encouraging, but at times I may be more directive and challenging.

Individual Therapy
Our work together in counseling is conversational and casual. We will work together to establish your goals for therapy. Each week, we may talk about whatever is most pressing to you, but I will ensure that we are consistently working toward your goals. I encourage you to take an active role in our work together: to ask questions and honestly share your thoughts and feelings. Most issues that are related to a limited situation can be addressed with short-term therapy. When exploring more complex issues, counseling may take longer.

My work with individuals includes working through depression and anxiety, coping with adult ADHD; healing from abusive relationships; recovering from divorce or infidelity; and working through a period of adjustment when you would like to work on who you are.

More Info About My Practice

There are times when our anguish is so powerful we feel crushed and disoriented. Counseling meets you with compassion in your deepest shame and sorrow. We take shame's power away when we bring it out into the open, and you are safe to do that here. From a place of brokenness and vulnerability, counseling can bring help you forge that pain into peace.

For those who want to incorporate their faith in counseling, I remind you of the overarching work of God in your life and help you find your identity and peace in Christ.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

The purpose of psychotherapy is to become whole again. We are guaranteed difficulty in this life, but it's what we do with the difficulty that matters. Our shame, sadness, disappointment, grief and longing are met with compassion in the counseling room. And in counseling you heal from these wounds and start to learn who you really are. To a degree the pain in our stories will always be with us, but they will no longer determine how we view ourselves and the world.
In therapy our stories are grieved and celebrated with weeping and rejoicing as new life grows out of the trials of the past.
