Mental Health in Bellingham

Access to mental health care is limited in Bellingham and Whatcom County. The county’s Crisis Triage Center (located in Bellingham) provides short-term stabilization and crisis treatment. It serves both individuals with mental health issues and those with drug withdrawal symptoms.

The center is the only one of its kind in the county. However, with only 13 beds, it cannot adequately meet the demand for mental health care in the region. Plans are now underway to increase the capacity of the center to 32 beds.

Residents who are unable to access appropriate mental health care often end up in hospital emergency rooms or jail. To help keep individuals with mental health issues out of jail, the county established a mental health court program in 2015. Individuals who are eligible for the program receive treatment for their condition and get help connecting with essential services.
