My Approach to Helping
Life is a fun roller coaster ride when we know what to expect, but it can sometimes be scary if we aren't prepared for the upcoming twists and turns. When one or more members of a family struggles with anger, anxiety, impulsivity, or understanding social norms, the whole family can feel exhausted and stressed.
I help individuals, couples, and families find peace within the home. Is your house full of emotions, but they are usually loud angry ones, constantly sarcastic, or they are no longer expressed and are now just hidden deep inside of you? Perhaps you are hoping your child will someday stop the behaviors that are causing you so much pain.
Counseling is a team effort to resolve the difficulties standing between you and happiness. Some of the approaches I use in our sessions include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Bowenian Therapy, Play Therapy, and Structural Therapy. My goal is not to have you as a life-long client, but to teach skills to you or your family so that you are able to handle what life hands you.
More Info About My Practice
As I work with my clients, I tailor each session to fit the needs of my client's and their goals. Many times the issues facing clients seem overwhelming, but so often the solutions are readily available. Working with each client or family I strive to help them find the strengths and skills that they already have and find new ways to apply them to their situations. Each person has the ability to create change in their surroundings, sometimes is just takes an outside voice to help guide them into a new direction.
My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy
I believe that psychotherapy is an opportunity to explore the idea of what a better future looks like and then developing a plan so that a person can grow and prepare for that dreamed future which is brighter than today. However, understanding the reasons and situations that hold one confined in the current space can be difficult by yourself, but the journey becomes easier and more manageable with someone walking beside you, someone who is dedicated to helping you discover your inner strengths and abilities. Psychotherapy is about discovering all the inner resources that people already have and creating even more of them because each person deserves to dream about a better future.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
I believe that each time a client sits in my office and greets me, I have received one of the greatest honors possible. In the simple act of walking into my office they have indicated that they trust me with their emotional life, their family, their pain, and their future. I hold that trust with reverence as I work beside them. I am just a witness to their struggles, strengths, and growth, I am there by invitation only. Weekly as I enter into their lives, I am reminded how transient my position is within their world, but am transfixed by the depth of their commitment to exploring and creating a new and beautiful future. This is what I love about my calling to be a therapist, walking beside people as they discover who they want to become and learning that they already have the abilities to blossom into that person. I treasure watching as they fling off of the thoughts and behaviors that have oppressed them for years in order to establish wonderfully new methods of living.
