My Approach to Helping

Are you looking for a safe space for your child or teen to express their emotions honestly and learn coping skills related to stressful life events? Have they refused therapy citing distrust, boredom or no connection?

Are you an adult who is feeling stuck? You know what you "should" be doing, but don’t know why you haven’t been able to yet? Have you been told to use mindfulness techniques to ease anxiety and stress, but haven’t found a practice that works for you or feels accessible?

Are you grieving the loss of a person, relationship or identity-and the world is telling you to “move on”, or that you aren't grieving right way?

As a person-centered, integrative therapist with 15 years of experience, I use a collaborative approach with my clients to fit with their interests and strengths. The arts help uncover subconscious motivations and can make coping skills fun. Although expressive arts is my speciality, I use a wide array of modalities based your needs and interests.

I have cultivated a deep sense of listening through 10 years of working with hospice patients, their children and families, and the bereaved. Additionally, I have experience working with at-risk youth, people with physical and cognitive disabilities, caregivers and people receiving inpatient psychiatric care. My goal is to make a space for you to expand your capacity to cope with the pain of the human condition (stress, anxiety, illness, grief.)

Throughout my career, I have integrated the arts to empower clients. I believe in the ability of art, music, writing, and drama to respond to human suffering and enhance healing when integrated with compassionate talk therapy. I am currently completing training at the Center for Creative Arts Therapy to become the first REAT (Registered Expressive Arts Therapist) in Kansas or Missouri in 2022.

I have openings for new clients January 2022. I offer an optional free 15-minute phone consultation to discuss your specific needs.

Beyond individual 50 minute psychotherapy appointments, I also provide expressive arts based group therapy and serve residents of long-term care facilities.
I have 20 years experience using creative arts and innovative techniques including

-using electronic music instruments to engage people with neurocognitive disorders and differently abled people in music making
-playing the accordion
-multi-sensory expressive arts groups that engage residents in reminiscing, meaning making and joy.
-engaging incarcerated youth in music creation and recording.

I have received numerous grants for my community based art projects including funding from The Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts and The Charlotte Street Foundation.
