I work with clients experientially to feel deeply into their own emotions that may be locked away. I seek out glimmers of core emotion in the present moment -- that is where the magic or possibility for change lives. Keeping it all inside does not work forever; moreover, the costs can be too high: loneliness, inability to feel close with friends and loved ones, depression, anxiety, and addiction.

It takes courage to open up with another person and to share what's really going on. It also takes courage to hope for change. Therapy cannot immediately change your brain chemistry or your marriage. But -- it can do a lot. Perhaps you are avoiding fights with your spouse and therefore not talking about much as a result. Therapy can be a nonjudgmental place to figure out what you feel and go towards it. Later you may decide to talk about how you feel with important people in your life.

My basic assumption is that we humans thrive and develop in safe environments, within safe relationships. Therapy should be a safe relationship but a goal of therapy might be to create and nurture vital and safe relationships in your personal life.

More Info About My Practice

I am training in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy. This model assumes that working deeply will bring people in touch with their inner longings to be content with yourself, and good to others in your life. I want to encourage clients to access more than their thinking but also their experience, the way their body feels, and images that arise over the course of a session.

I am also a student of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I am the current president of the Society for Psychoanalytic Studies in St. Paul.

How Psychotherapy Can Help

People tend to avoid difficult emotions or experiences because they are overwhelming. But the avoidance has its own costs. By going towards difficult emotions, I believe therapy can transform them. You should feel some sense of hope or lightness after the first couple of sessions.
