Everyone experiences pain. For many, our pain originates from outside of ourselves, we get hurt by those we love, we are rejected by those we admire, people dismiss us and, eventually, we internalize all of that pain. If it is not addressed properly that pain can turn into anger, rage, and bitterness, making our lives and relationships difficult.

Counseling and therapy do change lives. It's not magic and it's not wishful thinking, it's intentionally looking within yourself to find the source of the pain and addressing the needs that lie within. As a survivor of childhood sexual and physical abuse, addiction, homelessness, a life of crime, and eventually prison, I know first-hand the power that counseling has to transform one's life.

As a clinical professional, and a consumer of counseling myself, I've come to realize that everyone has pain, everyone has issues, but not everyone recognizes those things that are barriers to them living the best version of their lives. That is why I utilize a more assertive, in-your-face, form of therapy. I believe that my job, as a clinical expert, is to hold up a mirror to allow you to see what I see so that you can decide if changes need to be made.

Emotional/Psychological pain can be debilitating and sap people of their hopes and dreams, so the work that I do is focused on creating 'hope' so that my clients can find the energy and drive to do the incredibly difficult work of changing... and believe me, change IS difficult but not impossible.

If you are looking to create a new life, take a new direction, and/or reinvent yourself, then give me a call and let's get working on your new AMAZING life!

He was recently featured on the nationally syndicated Michaela Pereira Show on HLN. He is an expert in sexual/affectional orientation, gender identity, sex trafficking, and loss.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I specialize in working with clients on issues related to depression and anxiety, trauma, relationship/couples counseling, as well as Multicultural Counseling with a special emphasis on LGBTQI+ Issues, including Gender Identity Issues. I work with clients, whether individuals or couples/families, to address their pain and help them process their grief and trauma.

Had a Negative Therapy Experience?

Not every therapist is the right fit for every client and the opposite is also true. What I have found is that often times, the therapist who is most unlike you is the one who is able to help you become the version of yourself that you have always longed to become.

There are LOTS of therapists out there and it is important to find the right one for you. I am not, by any means, a typical therapist. I challenge my clients (a lot), I push them to grow, to stretch, to be more than they thought they could be because after having survived a life of horror and trauma, I know what the human spirit is capable of handling... you are stronger than you know.

If you are looking for a shy, quiet, therapist who will just sit back, nod their head and say things like, "Ok, how does that makes you feel" or "Mmhmm, tell me more"... then I am not the therapist for you. But, if you are tired of being in pain, scared, lonely, misunderstood, isolated, stepped on... then I am DEFINITELY the therapist you need.

Life is hard, living is difficult, but we can make it easier, less painful if we are willing to do the work. Change is not easy. Change doesn't happen overnight and certainly doesn't happen without dissonance, dissonance is discomfort, discomfort is pain... Change does not happen without pain. Having the right therapist to assist you in your journey makes all the difference.

Who do you want fighting alongside you through your journey, someone who has never been to war or someone who has been through hell and come out the other side successfully? The therapist you choose can/does make a very difficult journey much easier.

Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance

The relationship you have with your therapist is essential to your healing. In order for counseling and therapy to be the most effective, it is important for you to have a strong, trusting relationship with your therapist (after all, you are going to be telling them some pretty intimate details of your life)!

When choosing a therapist, it is necessary for you to take the time to determine, 'Is this someone with whom I can develop a strong rapport'? Also, I personally believe that a client MUST choose a clinician who will challenge them to be more, to do more, to grow more, than they ever thought possible.

Why would you ever spend money to see a therapist who only wanted you to be 'a little better'? My goal, my job, is to work myself out of a job... what that means is that I work with my clients in order to alleviate the pain, the trauma, the barriers that prevent them from living their BEST lives so that they don't have to keep coming back to see me.
