My Approach to Helping

My approach is gentle and eclectic, I view therapy as person-centered and collaborative. I think about the family system, the environment, parenting styles, relationships, generational trauma, systemic racism, and the larger society, etc. I believe that the client is the expert on themselves and having someone listen to understand can be helpful to process, reflect, and work through conflict. I am very passionate about supporting family members through trauma and crisis while increasing understanding and communication within the family unit.

I am invested in you and your goals, you drive therapy in what you want to discuss, I won’t push you to talk about things you’re not comfortable talking about. I view the space between us as a container that I have and can hold onto the things you’ve talked about so you don’t have to carry that with you afterward. I might remind you to throw stuff in the container. After talking about the hard stuff, I might encourage you to take some deep breaths, leave the energy with me in that space, leave the physical space you’re in, and come back to it a bit later.

Some of the theories I use in my practice are attachment, systems theory, strengths-based, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), tools from dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), family systems, relational, trauma-focused, mindfulness, guided imagery, and culturally informed.

Building trust and rapport within the therapeutic relationship is important to me. I am also a parent and I know that parenting is one of the hardest jobs you can have, and “adulting” while parenting is hard too. I like to normalize this hard stuff and validate feelings. I believe that we are all out there trying to do our best.

Participating in therapy as a client takes a great deal of vulnerability and bravery, and I acknowledge and appreciate that throughout the journey. I will offer some tidbits about myself along the way, as a way to build trust and lessen the power dynamics. I won't have all the answers, but I will support you in exploring the answers and figuring things out together.
