My passion is providing individual and family therapy to teens and young adults who are struggling with life transitions, overwhelming emotions, and identity confusion. In my opinion, psychotherapists should use evidence-based interventions and treatment should be as effective and time-limited as possible. My approach is solution focused and goal driven, not problem-based. I build on what is going right with the individual and his/her family. My hope is to provide adolescents / young adults and their family members with strong communication skills and effective coping skills that they can continue using long after treatment is over.

More Info About My Practice

I have worked with adolescents and young adults in a variety of settings for the past 12 years, including outpatient substance abuse, inpatient psychiatric treatment, and at a Douglas County high school. I started my private psychotherapy practice in downtown Colorado Springs in the summer of 2017.

I am pleased to announce that Heather Irwin, MA has joined my practice. She grew up on the east coast, like me. She has a Masters in psychology and she will be graduating with a doctorate of psychology from Pacific University this spring. She has 15 years of experience working with adolescents, adults, and criminal offenders. She is particularly interested in men's issues. She is a no BS type of therapist with a great sense of humor. I am so excited to have her join my team!

Kaeley Nepplova is our office manager. She answers our phones, does our scheduling, and keeps us organized. She is also a local business owner and she formerly worked as a middle school teacher.

I myself am passionate about working with teens and young adults. Rather than seeing adolescence as a horrible phase that parents and kids must suffer through, I view it as a unique time for special milestones, creativity, fun, and opportunities for both teens and parents to learn new skills and to broaden their perspectives of themselves and each other. I would be honored if you invite me along for part of your journey!

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Is your adolescent or young adult having difficulty getting launched into the next phase of their life? Are you concerned that your son or daughter is struggling with depression, anxiety, or just "the blues?" Have you noticed your child is becoming distant and withdrawn from family and friends? Has your teen or young adult dropped out of activities? Does your child appear more worried about grades or job performance? Did your son or daughter recently fail out of school, get arrested, attempt suicide, or lose a job? These are the types of concerns I address in my private practice. Most adolescents lack insight regarding how serious their behavioral and emotional problems have become. Many will blame others for their issues. They are often resistant to participating in mental health treatment, or they minimize the time and effort that real change on their part will require. These teens are torn between their desire to become independent from their parents and accepted by their peers. At the same time, their emerging identities are shaky and they still crave love, support, acceptance, and attention from their parents. My role is to improve parent-child relationships by helping parents navigate that tricky balance between allowing their teen just enough independence to encourage self-confidence and growth but also setting firm expectations and giving reasonable consequences when those expectations are not met.
