My Approach to Helping
I would like to begin by telling you a little bit about my therapeutic style so you have a better feel for how I might be working with you. I am a Person-Centered therapist focusing on you as a person, I meet you exactly where you are with no judgment and no specific expectations of how you might approach therapy. I also believe that every client has the potential to be an expert on themselves. As your therapist I am simply a guide on your life path, but you choose what path to take and I will follow you. I also believe that the answers to your problems lie within you and I will be asking you questions that help you to come to your own conclusions on specific issues that we are addressing in therapy. I really like the idea of Holistic medicine. so we will be focusing on the delicate balance between mind, body, and spirit. I believe that our problems stem from an imbalance in one of these areas. So, as far as the mind goes, we will be working on your thought process and how you view the world around you and your specific role in it. I will be teaching you a specific technique called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT. CBT will help you begin to be able to recognize the cognitive distortions and negative thoughts that contribute so significantly to your problems and you will learn how to reframe these thoughts over time. There are other techniques that we will use that will assist you with strengthening your mind as well, but we will get into those later on. When we talk about the body we will use techniques like progressive muscle relaxation to help you to really connect with your body and to decrease the stress and anxiety that you may be feeling at this time in your life. We will also focus on making sure that you are exercising and eating right as well. Spiritually we will focus on any religious beliefs or lack thereof that you may have and begin to incorporate those into our work together. I have used Tibetan singing bowls in my work at times as they produce a very pleasant sound that soothes the soul or our inner being.
I am an eclectic therapist pulling from a variety of therapeutic interventions and techniques. I tend to cater my technique to each individual, there is no cookie-cutter approach to my work with a client. I strongly believe in the power of journaling and often encourage my clients to write in their journals on a regular basis as this can move therapy along and help you to truly begin to understand yourself better. I truly look forward to working with you and I welcome a discussion of any therapy goals that you might have so that we can have a trajectory for the beginning of our journey together. I look forward to meeting you soon and please take care.
