Ventura is the government seat of Ventura County, California. The name “Ventura” is shorthand for San Buenaventura—the official name of the city. Ventura has a land area of 22 square miles. The city was incorporated in 1866.

Ventura has a population of 111,000 people. The median age is 39 years old. Roughly 6,800 veterans live in the city.

The racial composition of Ventura is 57% white, 35% Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 1% black. Fifteen percent of residents were born in a foreign country. Over 27% of residents have a native language that is not English. Ventura is home to 21,700 Spanish speakers and 700 Chinese speakers.

People in Ventura earn a mean annual salary of $33,500. The median household income is $70,500. The homeownership rate is 54%. Roughly 11% of residents live in poverty. 

Mental Health in Ventura

Access to mental health services is a growing concern in Ventura. Twelve percent of residents do not have health insurance. Access to care is even more limited for certain populations in the city.

City officials suggest local resources have not kept up with the growing population of seniors.  There is also a special interest in assisting homeless residents and veterans. The city plans to use local funds to support intervention and mental health treatment programs for at-risk residents.
