Lansing is the capital city of the state of Michigan. Portions of the city lie in Clinton, Ingham, and Eaton Counties. Lansing has a land area of 36 square miles. About 117,000 people live in the city.

The population of Lansing is 55% white, 21% black, 12% Hispanic, and 4% Asian. Seven percent of residents were born in a foreign country. Twelve percent speak a language other than English at home. The city of Lansing has 6,100 Spanish speakers and 1,100 Arabic speakers.

Lansing is home to 6,000 veterans. Roughly 14% of residents have a disability that affects their everyday lives. Of adults 25 and older, around one in four have a bachelor’s degree.

Mental Health in Lansing

Lansing school officials have noted a variety of mental health issues among their student population. A growing number of students are refugees from other countries, and many of them experience posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. In 2014, the Lansing school district began a new initiative known as Project PEACE. The project offers counseling and referral services to students in need of mental health support.

A study conducted during the 2015-2016 school year revealed there is a great need for mental health services in schools. Roughly 19% of 7th graders in Ingham County and 21% in Eaton County reported that they have seriously considered suicide. In each county, 8% of the students surveyed had already attempted suicide.
